Your DVD can contain data on one or both sides and also has a "dual-level" feature available to increase the amount of information one DVD can hold-these formats are:
DVD-5: single layer, one-sided; holds 4.7 Gigabytes
DVD-9: double layer, one-sided; holds 8.5 Gigabytes
DVD-10: single layer, double-sided; holds 9.4 Gigabytes
DVD-18: double layer, double-sided; holds 17 Gigabytes
